kilt
HOw to put on the pendragon pre-pleated kilt
Hold the kilt up by the tape sewn into it. You will notice one side is longer than the other. The SHORTER side is the bottom of the kilt.
Tie the the tape around your waist with the shorter side against your but. Center it across your back so that the point where the tie stops being sewn to the kilt is on the same point on each hip.
On the right side, follow the line of the plaid out from where the tape is sewn to the front edge of the kilt.
You will be bringing this part across the front of your body.
So now you will be following the line of the plaid from the point where it is sewn to the kilt out to the left side’s front edge.
This is the tricky part: you need to lay this part flat across your front and you will be bringing the other side across from the left to the right ON TOP of this piece, BUT UNDER the top half of the other side of the kilt. (when I put it on the mannequin, I will often throw the top half of the right side of the kilt over the mannequin’s “head”. If you have a person nearby , you could have them hold it for you. This is the main reason some people will tell you have have to be lying down to properly put on a kilt.)
Even I can’t tell what is happening in this photo, but you are bringing the left side front piece over the top of the so that they overlap in front of your body
Slide a belt around your waist to hold the two front pieces in place.
Take a breath, you are halfway there.
Put on your doublet.
Bring it up to the grommets on your left shoulder.
Reach down with your right hand and grab the hem of the top half of the kilt
Reach behind you and grab the back of the kilt, about mid back and 10” from the hem
Bring it up over the top of your left shoulder
Secure it with a tie, making sure to also secure the front part as well. You can cover the tie with a broach or cloak pin if you have one.
The left side of the top half of the kilt now needs to be tucked back. I like to roll it up a bit and then bring it back towards your hip.
And cover it with the draping from the back of the kilt.
Then I just tuck it back under the waist (being held by the belt)
Then just stand in front of mirror to tuck, adjust and fluff until it looks the way you want it to.
